Travelling?

Today, if you want to travel someplace you can get there in a lot less then a day, depending on where you want to go. Back in the early 1800s though, travelling somewhere could take a lot  longer then a month, in this case, Victor travel’s from his home in Geneva, to his University in Ingolstadt would take him close to three months, that’s an insane amount of time to be travelling by anything; boat, car, walking, and especially by horse. Today, that would take 7hrs, 31mins by car and just over 1hr by plane, definitely a huge difference in not only time but by mode of travel.

Back in the early 1800s, Victor would have had to stop to get food for him and his horse, as well as sleep, water, and/or shelter from bad weather. The cost of traveling is also a lot different, mainly because of the difference in the time period and the length of time it would take to get from one place to another.  In 2019 the cost would vary from the different methods of transportation, if you took the bus it would cost around $50. Driving your own car there, probably just a tank of gas, which is different for every car. Back in 1818 though, Victor would have had to pay for his food, water and shelter for his long three month trip. The comfort of travelling is way different now too. We have a lot of different luxuries like air conditioning and music/radio to listen to on the ride there, and nice comfy chairs to sit in, as well as suspension to absorb the bumps in the road. In the early 1800s Victor could only travel by horse and carriage which would be very uncomfortable for a three month period because there is no suspension at all and there was most likely an uncomfortable bench to sit on.

Anyway, this is most likely one of the reasons why Victor stayed in Ingolstadt for six years until he had to returned home for an emergency death. This also proves that anyone would rather travel in 2019 then back in the early 1800s.
