Horticulture

Our courses enables students to develop knowledge and skills related to agriculture, floristry, forestry, horticulture, and landscaping.

Students will learn to identify a broad range of plant and animal species; examine factors that affect the growth of plants and animals and the quality of products derived from them; and develop process, design, and maintenance skills required in the green industries.

Students will also learn about safe and healthy working practices, develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to green industry activities, and learn about apprenticeships and other post-secondary education and training opportunities, as well as employment opportunities that may be pursued directly after graduation.

Grade 9 Tech Shop Around: Horticulture

This is a six week Horticulture segment. Students are introduced to the basics of plant care and plant identification. Students will carry out a number of experiments with plants that they can take home.

Grade 10 Green Industries: Horticulture

Students learn different methods of plant propagation, plant care, and industry terminology. We have weekly plant identification, experiments and taste testing.

Flower-Power Fridays: Flowers to design and take home.

Senior Magnet Horticulture

This is a double credit course.

Students are involved in Greenhouse production where we grow hanging baskets, container gardens, bedding plants, herbs and vegetables for our annual Spring Sale in May. Students work with organic and biological methods to control pests.

There is also a landscape design unit where students create landscape drawings to scale.

Outdoor Education

Learn techniques of outdoor survival, first aid, finding, harvesting and using edible wild plants, shelter construction, weather forecasting and orienteering.
