    SWAC/Dual Credit

School College Work Initiative (SCWI) is a co-operative effort between the Council of Ontario Directors of Education (CODE) and the Committee of College Presidents (COP) and is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD).

The goal is to assist in creating a seamless transition for students from secondary school to college.

    How does SCWI benefit students?

    • Helps students complete their OSSD and gain greater insight into education and career planning.
    • Increases awareness of various college and apprenticeship pathways.
    • Assists students in transitioning to college or an apprenticeship program.

SCWI funds two programs - Dual Credit and School Within a College (SWAC). They are free to the students.

    Dual Credit

    What are dual credit courses?

    • Dual credit courses count twice: once towards an OSSD and once towards postsecondary certification.
    • There are two models of delivery for dual credits:
      • Team-taught courses are delivered at a Grand Erie secondary school jointly by the college instructor and the secondary teacher. The secondary school and college curricula are followed at the same time. There is no limit on the number or type of secondary credits students may earn through the team-taught model.
      • Courses delivered at a college are lead by a college instructor and are supported by a secondary teacher. The college curriculum is followed. Students may count a maximum of four credits towards their OSSD through this model.

    School Within a College (SWAC)

    What is SWAC?

    • SWAC is partnership among Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, Grand Erie District School Board, Conestoga College in Brantford and Fanshawe College in Simcoe.
    • This program is designed for students requiring an alternative secondary school environment to complete their high school credits and wanting a college experience. Students are enrolled in secondary and college courses but attend these classes at the college.
    • In this program students must take at least one dual credit course per semester but may also take courses for high school credit only.
    • Secondary teachers provide supervision and support for students.
    • This program is also available to adults over 21 who do not have an OSSD.

Contact your secondary school Guidance office for course offerings and more information on how to experience one of these exciting programs.
