West Lynn Public School Reads its Way to the Fair

est Lynn Public School is in for a treat after landing first place in the Read Your Way to the Fair competition, hosted annually by the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show. 
The competition was sponsored by Ontario Power Generation to support interest in student reading. Top schools won a cash prize put toward books and reading accessories, but the $1,000 incentive was just one of many reasons to shoot for the stars.

It was a whole-school effort. Mrs. Atkinson’s Grade 3 class adopted the role of West Lynn cheerleaders, generating excitement and distributing the Read Your Way to the Fair trophy to a different class each day. Junior and intermediate classes teamed up to read with primary students, and Ms. Huffman’s Grade 7 and 8s helped track reading levels to document them online. 

“We are honoured to be a participant and an award winner in the Norfolk County Fair’s Read Your Way to the Fair event, and so pleased to  celebrate literacy skills in our schools, aligning with Grand Erie’s goal to increase the overall reading proficiency of our students,” said West Lynn Principal, Miss Blunt. 

The contest concluded with West Lynn in first place and Grand Erie’s Lakewood Elementary School placed a close third, with a cash prize of $500. The grand prize of $1,000 was presented by Cathetine Atkins from the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show at the school’s recognition assembly on November 25. Students showed their gratitude in a thank-you note to the Ontario Power Generation. 

“The love of reading at West Lynn is something that we are extremely proud of. We are grateful and so appreciative to the Read Your Way to the Fair program for motivating us to track our progress and such an exciting prize,” added Miss Blunt. 

Projects like Read your Way to the Fair support Grand Erie’s literacy goals, with a focus on equity and inclusion in line with Grand Erie’s Multi-Year Plan.
