Grand Erie Congratulates This Year’s Top Scholarship Winners

Grand Erie is proud to acknowledge the graduating students receiving significant scholarships, bursaries and awards this year. The following students are beginning their post-secondary journeys having earned recognitions that will help them continue to learn, lead and inspire in their academic, community and personal endeavours.
Nansi Hassoun
Brantford Collegiate Institute and Vocational School
Nansi has been recognized for her excellence in STEM with the Schulich Leader Scholarship, valued at $80,000. Out of 300,000 applicants and 1,500 nominees, Hassoun was one of the hundred students who received the prestigious award this year. Schulich Leader Scholarship recipients are honoured for the complete dedication they put toward their studies, along with their dedication to STEM innovation.

Sierra Green
McKinnon Park Secondary School
Sierra Green, Grade 12 student and Indigenous Student Trustee this past year, has been recognized for her exceptional leadership skills and academic excellence.
Green received the National Indigenous Scholarship at Western University, valued at $50,000. The scholarship is awarded annually to five Indigenous students who stand out in their academic achievements, innovative thinking, and contributions to Indigenous communities.
Lucas Balog
Paris District High School
Lucas is the recipient of multiple esteemed scholarships this year, including the James Hillier Foundation Scholarship, Chancellor’s Scholarship, and the W.W. King Scholarship. The latter two achievements are offered through Queen’s University, and recognize Balog’s commitment to leadership, volunteer work, and academic success. The James Hillier Foundation Scholarship is valued at $20,000 over the span of four years and awarded to students residing in Brantford and Brant County.

Gurnirmal Kaur
North Park Collegiate and Vocational School
Gurnirmal received several awards this year, both locally and nationally, for her work on a science project titled, EzerBot: Detecting Phrases Indicative of Emotional Distress Within Online Platforms. The project was awarded a gold medal and eight special awards at the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair and at the Canada Wide Science Fair this past spring. Gurnirmal received the James Hillier Foundation Scholarship and will be attending the University of Waterloo this fall, studying in Systems Design and Engineering.

Chloe Duval
Pauline Johnson Collegiate and Vocational School
Chloe Duval is this year’s winner of the James Boughner Foundation Scholarship, valued at $25,000. This award, named in honour of the Brantford entrepreneur and philanthropist, increased last year, and is given to one graduating student who has made a noteworthy difference, either personally or within their school community. Chloe recently accepted an offer from the University of Guelph where she will study Biochemistry this fall.
Evangelina McKenzie Ferreira
Cayuga Secondary School
This year, the Krista Schaus Memorial Bursary was awarded to Evangelina McKenzie Ferreira. This award recognizes a student who mirrors the uplifting attitude that Krista Schaus, an inspiring figure in the Cayuga Secondary School community, carried throughout her life. Evangelina encourages her peers to be the best version of themselves and always lends a helping hand to those who need it. Evangelina honours Krista’s legacy in leaving a positive impact on the lives of others.
Congratulations to this year's scholarship and award winners, and to each and every Grand Erie graduate. Achieving the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma represents years of hard work, dedication and discovery, and lays the foundation for everything you will go on to achieve.
