The Grade 9 EQAO assessment of mathematics assesses the math skills students are expected to have learned by the end of the Grade 9 MTH1W course. It considers the skills students develop in mathematics from Grades 7 and 8, and as they transition into high school. The EQAO assessment happens at the end of each semester in Grade 9.

The assessment window for semester 1 classes is January 10 to February 2, 2023. The assessment window for semester 2 classes is May 29 to June 26, 2023. Your child’s classroom teacher will communicate the date their class will be doing the test.
The sample test gives students the opportunity to become familiar with the online assessment and its platform. Students will be able to try out the various tools, including built-in text-to-speech audio, zoom in and zoom out, high contrast and highlighter, in the e-assessment platform. We recommend students practice the sample test a number of times before they attempt the test.
During the assessment, students complete two sessions with four stages; the sample test consists of one session with two stages, and a total of 27 questions. This sample test also provides students with the opportunity to complete the various types of questions, including drag-and-drop, drop-down menu and single- and multiple-selection questions, that may be included on the assessment.
Both sessions of the test have an adaptive structure where students attempt 14 questions of medium difficulty first. Then, based on their performance, the next 13 questions may be low/medium difficulty or medium/high difficulty.

Students have access to calculators, paper and math tools during the test.
Mathematical formulas are provided on the Formula Sheets for students’ reference during the assessment. Formulas are given for perimeter, area, volume and surface area for various geometric shapes and geometric objects.
